Athletes and Social Media Use

Silver Lake athletes should be mindful of their use of social media as representatives of our high school teams.  Your reputation is the school's reputation when you proudly wear the Silver lake Uniform.  Read this article about how a college player was suspended for tweeting inappropriately.  Be a good sport!

The registration process to play a high school sport can be confusing and downright daunting for all involved, so I thought I would explain what goes on behind the scenes in the athletic department office around this time of the year.  First off, you have to understand that we are ending one season and moving into the next which includes a turnover of our coaching staff as well as our athletes.  We are simultaneously organizing a school wide awards night, training our winter coaches, moving through the tournament with some fall teams, and organizing a budget all in the same crazy weeks of November.  Let's suffice it to say that it is busy, but it gets done with a little help and cooperation from you.

The registration process:
We need everyone to register right now (deadline 11/14/12 7am) and once this happens we can check the following to be sure an athlete is eligible:

Report Cards
Discipline Hours owed
Athletic Equipment Owed
Age of Athlete (max 19 prior to Sept. 1, 2012)
Transfer from another school?
Foreign exchange program
Impact test within 2 years
Valid Physical within 13 months
User fee collected
Check on 4 year eligibility limit
Concussion training

I'm probably missing something here, but you get the idea.  If everyone registers early we can check all of these requirements AND prepare our  GREEN CARDS all in time for the Winter Pre-season Meeting!

And what is a GREEN CARD ANYWAY?  It is the card that tells a coach that the athlete is fully eligible, green means GO!

First Frost and EEE

Hey Sports fans.......As I write this post I feel part sports and farmer's almanac blogger wrapped into one.  With the first frost occurring over the weekend many of you have been inquiring about when we will resume playing games at night.  You should know that I have already contacted authorities to alert them that we need an official notice communicated to us when the ban is lifted.  Everyone is aware that the end of October marks the time for Senior night games etc.  In the meantime, I thought you would enjoy reading the following article which clearly states that the first frost is just the beginning of the end to the EEE threat:

Online pre-registrations nearing 300 mark

It is important that all students who intend to play a fall sport pre-register online as soon as possible.  Last Fall we had close to 400 registrants so I know there are at least 100 of you who have been procrastinating!! It would help our office to have all student-athletes pre-registered in order to check the vast number of eligibility qualifiers that must be checked before an athlete can receive their GREEN CARD (fully cleared) on August 14.

Please register now if you have not already done so.

We are a TEAM

Article "What do we have in common with Parents" by Tom Doyle echoes a theme that I have tried to lament at pre-season meetings and other venues "WE ARE A TEAM (coaches, athletes, parents) let's work together!"

Concussion crisis growing in girls’ soccer

I was particularly intrigued with this segment on Rock Center the other night.  It finally makes sense to me why we see a number of concussions year in year out with our athletes....weak NECK muscles!  I encourage you to read, watch this segment.....and encourage all of our Silver Lake Athletes to incorporate neck strengthening exercises into your everyday workouts.

Students are asked to sign-up for a spring sport team during lunch waves on March 1 & 2. Once we have these names we can begin the process of making our "green" cards. The green card is how we clear students for participation and is a very intensive process. The following eligibility areas have to be checked on over 400 student-athletes:

Discipline Hours owed
Status of physical
Transfer status
4-year eligibility
Impact Test
Paperwork completion
User Fee Paid
Equipment owed

If a student does not sign up on March 1 or 2, we lose valuable time to begin the clearing process.

Student will pick up a registration packet at sign-ups and are asked to please return the completed forms PRIOR to March 8 in the athletic office.
