Golf Team defeats Quincy 231- 266

Ray DiMestico shot a 33, setting a course record for the lowest 9 hole score ever recorded by any player in league play at Halifax. The team shot a 231 which is the lowest 6 man aggregate ever recorded in league play by any team at Halifax CC.

Athletic Handbook Changes for 2013-2014

Attention athletes and parents!  Please take the time to read this year's handbook with a specific focus on two changes for next year.

1. Team captains will now be named at the beginning of each respective sports season.  The philosophy behind this change is to allow continued growth and aspiration amongst student athletes during the off season and leading up to high school competition.  We believe this will afford all athletes an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and will strengthen our teams standing both on and off the field.  As a department we will strive to provide numerous leadership training initiatives to assist athletes in developing these skills leading up to the season.

2. The Silver Lake Chemical Health policy will now include a penalty for athletes who are in the presence of any and all of the substances noted in the handbook, including but not limited to alcohol and drugs.  The penalty will be 10% of the scheduled events during the season of which the violation occurred or the next sport that the athlete joins.  (For example:  basketball = 2 of 20 games, football = 1 of 11 games etc.). The school community views that attendance at social gatherings where alcohol, drugs or other illegal substances are present, is not an activity to be condoned for student-athletes.  As an athletic staff, we will be assisting student-athletes with a plan of action including what if scenarios and training workshops related to leading a healthy lifestyle.  We have been using research through a program called "Life of an Athlete" or LOA out of the American Athletic Institute.  I encourage parents and athletes to "like" LOA on Facebook by following this link: Facebook - Life of an Athlete

MIAA Softball Semi-Final Tournament Game

The Lakers advance to the semi-final game against Bridgewater-Raynham Thursday night in Taunton.  Game time is 7pm.  Tickets for the game will be $7 for adults and $5.00 for students.
A fan bus will depart from the Lake street parking lot at 5:30pm.  If you are interested in riding on the bus,  please signup and pay $3.00 at the main lobby kiosk.

Thanks to local businesses

A huge thank you to Sunshine Gardens and Halifax Girls Youth Softball for their generous contributions towards Phase 2 of 4 scoreboard purchases that have and will be made at Silver Lake. The School committee along with school officials have been working with local businesses to offset the cost of the scoreboards by offering advertisement panels as part of each scoreboard project.

The most recent board was erected at the varsity softball field as seen in the picture below.

The next project is a bit more involved since it will require its own structure. This next phase will provide a multi sport scoreboard on one side facing the varsity baseball field from right field servicing both Field Hockey in the fall and baseball in the spring. Another scoreboard will hang on the same structure and face the running track.

SLRHS Baseball Boosters and School District working together!

This past weekend many parents and friends of the SL Baseball Program got together to put a much needed new roof and coat of paint on the home side dugout.  The district purchased all the supplies while the boosters provided the invaluable "sweat equity:" to complete the project.  On behalf of the players, coaches, and the school I would like to thank all involved!

Winter Sports Awards Night Postponed to 3/13

Due to the inclement weather this evenings Winter Sports Awards night has been rescheduled to next Wednesday 3/13 at 5pm in the Auditorium.  We recognize that our Wrestling and Girls Basketball Boosters will be having banquets in town later in the evening and ask that the athletes attend the school awards from 5:00 - 5:45pm and then dismiss to their respective banquet venues.

This was the best alternative date given the availability of the auditorium, registration night for spring sports on Monday 3/11 and spring sport try outs beginning on Monday March 18.

Thank you for you flexibility and understanding.  Once again, if we only could control this New England weather!

Impact Testing Sessions

The school provides baseline and post tests for concussion management through a program called Impact.  It has been our goal to baseline test all students Grades 7-12 every two years.  The baseline test is good for two years since the experts say that the adolescent brain is ever growing and changing at this time in life.  We mandate the testing for all our athletes and ask when you registering for a sport to be sure your child has had a baseline within the last 2 years and that it will be good through the respective season of play.

This year alone we have tried to keep up with the 2 year baseline by testing all juniors during their Wellness Classes.  We have also baseline tested all of the 7th and 9th graders in their wellness classes.  If your son or daughter was absent or submitted an invalid test, they will have to makeup the test on their own by requesting a session with our Athletic Trainer and Wellness teacher Mr. Brian Bellinger.

Please note that in order to get a green eligibility card for Spring Sports a valid test needs to be taken prior to the Spring Pre-Season Meeting on March 11 at 6pm

Mr. Bellinger will be running 2 sessions on March 5 & 7 from 2:30-3:30pm in the Career Tech Computer Lab.  Please email him to sign up at bbellinger@slrsd.org.

Given the snowstorm bearing down on us and the Red Sox leaving yesterday to begin spring training I couldn't think of a better time to open up our online spring sports registration.  Besides, now you have plenty of time including February vacation to get this done.

The registration process to play a high school sport can be confusing and downright daunting for all involved, so I thought I would explain what goes on behind the scenes in the athletic department office 3 times a year year.  First off, you have to understand that we are ending one season and moving into the next which includes a turnover of our coaching staff as well as our athletes.  We are simultaneously organizing a school wide awards night, training our spring coaches, and moving through the tournament with some winter teams. Let's suffice it to say that it is busy, but it gets done with a little help and cooperation from you.

The registration process:
We need everyone to register right now ( deadline 3/3/13 11pm) and once this happens we can check the following to be sure an athlete is eligible:

Report Cards
Discipline Hours owed
Athletic Equipment Owed
Age of Athlete (max 19 prior to Sept. 1, 2012)
Transfer from another school?
Foreign exchange program
Impact test within 2 years
Valid Physical within 13 months
User fee collected
Check on 4 year eligibility limit
Concussion training

I'm probably missing something here, but you get the idea.  If everyone registers early we can check all of these requirements AND prepare our  GREEN CARDS all in time for the Spring Pre-season Meeting on March 11, 2013!

And what is a GREEN CARD ANYWAY?  It is the card that tells a coach that the athlete is fully eligible, green means GO!
