Inaugural Girls Ice Hockey Team for Silver Lake 2014-2015

The SL girls joined Whitman-Hanson Regional HS in a cooperative team agreement giving the Laker girls the historical 1st opportunity to play on their own school team.  Best wishes to Coach Kevin Cleary and the girls!  Thank you to all who supported and advocated for this to become a reality.  GO WHSL!

Positive Coaching Alliance Workshop for the High School Parent

This Monday November 24, Silver Lake Athletics will host a free workshop in the auditorium from 6:00-7:15pm for all interested parents. The workshop is possible through a partnership with the nationally recognized Positive Coaching Alliance.  Please register here if you plan to attend PCA WORKSHOP

 PARENT WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
“The High School Sports Parent: Developing Triple-Impact Competitors” (90 minutes)
This interactive workshop explores the role of Second-Goal Parents, supporting their children so that they have fun, positive experiences in sports. It examines how parents can help ensure their children’s experience yields healthy, developmental (physical, social, mental) outcomes that will serve them far beyond the playing field.
Parents will come away with knowledge about tools for supporting their child in his/her sports experience. Parents who attend a Parent workshop should be able to:
• Know what is expected of them as a high school sports parent
• Understand the parents’ goals and their child’s goals related to high school sports participation
• Match their behavior as a parent to their goals for their child’s high school sports experience
• Support their children to bounce back from mistakes and setbacks
• Teach their children about the importance of a growth-mindset
• Understand and manage the relationship between the Parent and Coach
Parents who attend this workshop may purchase the book ($5 as supplies last) The High School Sports Parent: Developing Triple-Impact Competitors, a book that has handy tips specific to the challenges facing parents of high school athletes, as well as helping maximize the parent’s relationship with their kids.

Xavier Dillingham selected to MIAA Student Advisory Committee

Over the past three summers the SL athletic department has been sending student-athletes to the New England Student Leadership Conference at Stonehill College.  Mackenzie Springer, Josh O'Neill, Ryne McNeilly have attended and this past summer Emily Skerritt, Brendan Guilderson, and Xavier Dillingham represented Silver Lake.  The MIAA selects its student advisory committee (a yearlong committment) during this conference and I am pleased to announce that our very own Xavier Dillingham was chosen to be a member of the 16 person committee.  I thought you would enjoy this recent article taken from the MIAA Educational Athletics Newsletter:

Double-Goal Coach Workshop Tuesday September 16 at SLRHS

I am pleased to announce that Tracy Jones will be our trainer from the Positive Coaching Alliance next Tuesday 9/16/14 at Silver Lake Regional High School.  We will have 30-40 coaches from the high school and close to 20 area youth coaches from Kingston, Plympton, and Halifax coming together for the common goal of developing winners in sports and life

Youth Coaches Workshop - Positive Coaching Alliance 9/16/14

Silver Lake athletics will be sponsoring a coaches workshop on Tuesday, September 16 from 6-8pm in the Silver Lake Regional HS Large Group Room (above library).

We have partnered with the Positive Coaching Alliance and will host three workshops this school year. Yesterday we completed our freshman athlete leadership orientation for a 120 students and next up is the coaches workshop.

Our vision for the coaches workshop was not only to provide education for the SL staff but to invite all our youth coaches in the area to attend as well for free. Our goal is to strengthen relationships between the HS and the youth programs and more importantly understand that the sport experience whether it at age 8 or 17 is more than just our teams' win loss record.

Plans are in motion to host the next class of inductees on January 24, 2015 at the Halifax Country Club. Nomination forms will be coming out soon with a deadline of September 19, 2014.  The next class will be selected by the SLRHS HOF committee and will be announced sometime around the Thanksgiving holiday.

Check out The Video Sports Page, every Thursday (7:30 p.m.),  Friday (12:30 p.m.) and Sunday nights (10:00 p.m.). The show airs on Comcast Channel 13 or Verizon Channel 43 in Kingston, Pembroke and Plympton.

The show is hosted by Carl A. Pratt and each week he has highlights and interviews on various high school teams and often times our Lakers are part of this popular cable tv show, which has been on the air since April 1989.

You may see your favorite Laker team or player showcasing his or her talents. Check it out each week.

Silver Lake Boys Soccer 2014 Alumni Game Friday, June 6, 2014

Kingston, MA - Silver Lake Regional High School will host an alumni game for Boys Soccer on Friday, June 6, 2014 at the High School’s track field. 

The alumni will square off and challenge each other in a match starting at 5:00 pm, followed by a trackside BBQ cookout.  Family, friends and soccer fans are invited to come by and root for your favorite players – admission is free, game shirts, BBQ cookout and refreshments will be available for purchase. 

Teams are forming now - Alumni who would like to play should register by May 30^th.  A $20 registration fee per player will cover the match, game shirts and the BBQ cookout. VARSITY SOFTBALL ONLY will be playing at Carlson Field, 45 Bare Cove Park Dr., Hingham Ma. The entrance to Bare Cove Park is located at 19 Fort Hill St. directly in front of of the new Hingham MBTA Commuter Rail Station and not far from the South Shore Country Club.

Freshmen Softball game vs. Cardinal Spellmen will not be played to day but will be played on Wednesday 4/9/14 at 3:30pm here at Silver Lake.

Boys Lacrosse:  JV now playing at 4:00pm on lacrosse field followed by the Varsity team at 5:15pm.

Freshmen Baseball and JV softball will ride on the same bus today to Hingham HS

Putting it all in perspective: "The Athletic Scholarship"

Planning for college in the year 2014 is a daunting task for families and understandably a financial hardship on many.  Many parents and student-athletes look to athletics as the possible answer to their predicament, when in fact the greater percentages for scholarships remain within academics and financial aid packages (over $13 Billion according to this report).  Many parents are willing to spend money on private secondary schools and post-graduate years with the hope of an athlete getting a leg up on the race for athletic scholarships, spending money now to get money later which in the long run has families paying far more than the average pubilc school athlete.

This latest research from the NCAA is a sobering reality about how difficult it is to play beyond high school athletics never mind have the promise of a scholarship at the Division I or II level:
For example there were 1,086,627 high school football players last year with only 20,000 freshmen roster positions available:  NCAA Research September 2013.  This 2008 chart from the NY Times breaks down the odds even further by gender and includes a variety of sports.

Nothing in life is for free, not a rollercoaster ride or a bus ride, never mind a "full ride".  Teaching our young athletes to work hard and study hard now without the pressure of athletic scholarships is the best possible message we can send them.
